I fear I'm being haunted
Everywhere I look
There are birds of prey
This morning I found parts
Spewed across my deck
A foot attached to a thigh
I think the correct term is claw or talon
But I've never seen such a small one detached
It was menacing to say the least
But not due to its size
The stature of the bird previously in existence
Was bigger than a finch
Smaller than a city pigeon
"Raccoons," Tara said
But I say birds of prey
They are known to be the biggest predators of their own kind
At least that's what Ray told me
Tara later found the spine and another piece
Which she could not distinguish
Birds of prey
Cannibals
All my thoughts fly with the owl
Thinking of how slow it must chew
With a beak
Earlier this morning
I saw two birds in the same tree
Playing
And I thought about nesting
And what a precise task that must be
How the beak must be like a sewing needle
Pulling one piece through others
To secure its stitch
Among the bound materials
Maneuvering and engineering
It must be genetic
Something you don't even think about
I see similarities
Nesting, providing
Hunting, destroying
A flair and a passion for protecting your own kind
And annihilating that which is different
Even if it's just the sick or disenfranchised
Inadvertently
By way of ignorance
Laziness
Lack of perspective
Affected
Birds of prey
I'm haunted
