Happy Enough, part I

Asked mom what gives
Ain't you happy
Always cryin'
Furrowed
Inside
Joyful tears
Ain't buyin' it
Life is hard sometimes
Outside
Happy enough

She raised the tumbler of coffeemilk to her lips
Hands all shake and quiver
Same hands drove all the kids to school
Scared shitless
Mom don't pay attention to nothin'
One of these days
She gonna get us all killed
She's jumpy
Haphazard
She should drive a truck
At least
Then
We'd all be safe

Going through the motions
Facing the door
Eyes open
Sleeping
Inside
Not caring
High volume talk
Always honking the horn
Outside
Happy enough

Don't ask mom for nothin'
She always says yes and you feel bad later
Can't say no
That's the problem with women
Can't say no until they can
And then
That's all they say
Unless you her children
Then you like a piece of heaven
Enough to make a man sick
Once all the kids are out of the house
Maybe she'll find herself another man
But maybe a good one
One that loves her wrinkles
And makes her laugh
'Cause she still got it
Somewhere
In there

Buried under thick makeup
Little pilot light
Keeps going
Hoping
Inside
Never leave
Kids all leave
Everything leaves one day
Outside
Happy enough
