Brassica oleracea

Each tight ribbon
So forgiving
Every thin and delicate membrane
Getting its due
Taking its turn

Little hands resting in mounds
A peaceful treaty
Despite the yard rules

Embracing the illusion
That every part makes the whole
And therefore making reality
A perfect composition
Every time

Riddled with condensation
Masking all needs with subtle dignity
A balance beam of basic identity
Hugging itself and all parts of itself
Over and over again
Until a mighty fist
So docile and serene
Becomes a convincing head
Centered and forgiving

Yelling in a softened whisper
Bright as a bell
With milk for blood
Humble and nurturing
Overtaking any acquaintance
Without intent

Gracefully taking command
Of the situation
By respecting the rules believed to be true

In this way
The honor is placed
Respectfully back in the ground
Where smaller things with less
Can be given the opportunity
To shine like a diamond

And so a dusty coat
Always goes well
With silkwoven fairytales
The origins mythic
Sprouting from dirt and clay
Behaving in tandem
With mother nature herself;
Friend to Old Man Winter
Sister to invention
Child to starlight
