For All Intents: Balconies

All the fire escapes aglow
Not deep orange furnace heat
But candles and string lights
Tables reflecting a flickering shine
Chairs filled with people chatting
Bottles empty and adding vague colors
Cigarette butts like fireflies drinking wine
Laughter in waves, bouncing around corners
Not knowing where conversations begin or end
People are smiling until someone drops their keys
And when the fire comes
Everyone is prepared
Grab what is important:
The fire escape railing.
