Remedial Salvation

In broken dialect
We distrust ourselves
Removing the pieces
That hem and haw
Leaving ragged
An otherwise trim
And resolute ending

With nothing to seek
Pretending in exile
We hide our holes
Instead of mending
Repair left for those
Who can't afford
New articles
To live and die by

Washed clean of regret
We shake out the dirt
Apply appliqué
Call it by its name in French
Resurrecting the essence
Of something romantic
And hope no one notices
We are never changing

Subject to change
Is a clause we reject
From the pit of our stewpot
Clawing the air
When someone reminds us
That change includes
Our least favorite attributes
Namely disintegration
Spoil and removal
