Fenced In

It was the plainest fence ever
Kept the view straight and somber
The focus ahead
Crooked and splintered
Darkened by rain
Lightened by sun
It was gray in a good way
If you ask the neighbors
Could be a little less rickety
But it had charm

Then there was the cock and balls incident
Roughly shaped out in red spray paint
A sloppy cartoon of the masculine member
A silly shape
Not nearly real enough to impose any shock or weight
A clownish representation
But drawn away from the fence
And all its woodiness
All its natural tone
Focus is lost
Momentarily
And the subsequent reaction is separation
Separation of home and street
Separation of city and suburb
Separation of wall and ground
The neighbors began to discuss a pending invasion
Or fear that the impressionables might get some ideas
Somewhere in the middle is where it went next

A face was drawn over the original design
In black spray paint
Covering the red almost completely
The long hair providing the shaded detail
A simple but pretty face
With a speech bubble
Saying, quite simply, Make Art
Oddly enough
While it was a nice enough image
The overall reaction was the same
Soon it was a banding together
There was talk of paint remover
Belt sanders
New wood
Fresh solid colored paint
And in the end
A coalition of sorts
Regained control
Of the collective consciousness
On what is good
And what is acceptable
Focus was regained
On the straight ahead
By way of a belt sander
And a few men in sports jerseys and sweat pants
Discussing how fast the girls in the neighborhood were growing up
Or rather
How developed they are for their age
There haven't been any more distractions
But spring is here
And maybe a lawn sculpture
Might mix things up
