Octopus' Garden

Believe me when I tell you
Those spots are not liver
These hands are not tired
This body, not a teenager's, but
This breath is not wasted
- the train stopped moving -
But there it goes again

Wash your concern with cool rivers
Sustain on rice or potato or seaweed
Enjoy the sensation of sun
This break in the atmosphere is temporary
The road curves this way and that
Before reaching that same house on the hill

All these plans are outrageous
Put your foot down
Nail it to the floor
Let the other run free
It's only temporary
When you feel the pull of science -
Break a candy glass over someone's head
Feed the dog a memory stick
Lease an education

Uneven wear on your shoes means
You're not switching it up enough
Undo the nail
Check it for rust
Tangle your wrists in begonias and telephone cord
Flavor your water
Bathe in sand
But always remember
Your end is my end is ending forever
Always remember
Pearl divers never fall in love with an octopus
They simply succumb
