Not Caring

Today could be any day
But today is different
I don't have a train pass
And I don't care --

I drove about two hundred miles
Flew about two thousand
Up in the air
All before noon
And I didn't even care --

I'll ride and walk until I die
And ride and walk some more
These travels are real and legitimate
And I still don't care --

Girls with long legs and serious faces
Ride the train
Then they walk away
In some direction away from themselves
Like they don't care --

Still there is silence
In the woods
Where the crickets know things
And decide who should care --

I was just there
And will be there again someday
With herons and carrion
Salamanders and palmettos
Humming our own tune
To show how little we care --
