The Trail Walker

The headphones stayed off
My urge was strong
And I reached for them twice
But then I stopped myself
So I could linger
On our conversation
For just a little longer

One of my oldest and truest friends
Who opens his chest like a bird
And releases the promises
To stay in touch: no
To be more fruitful: no
Just to be more of himself
More and more; more
And that's all we could want
The us that know him

The conversation about the trail
Our privilege
Artisan discussion
Allowance to suffer
And cower, haunt
We don't take it for granted
We damn it for garnet, occasionally
And sing freedom songs
Where none be needed
But as a reminder
Should anyone forget
